Americans should speak whatever languages they want. And yes, we're living in a much smaller world than one hundred years ago, so learning second and third languages is becoming ever more important, but I don't think a monolingual individual will ever be considered "illiterate" or "primitive." That's silly. Frankly, it'll mostly depend where you live and what you want to do for a living.

I don't know, I think everyone should learn English.
But I think it wouldn't hurt an American to learn another language besides only knowing English. I'm an American (of Mexican descent) and I also know Spanish and Italian, and soon Chinese. But my main point is that you can't force another language on people; not on the Americans, and certainly not on people who have just recently arrived here or have been here a long time or their whole life. Learning a new language is hard, very hard. That also goes along with assimilating to this country, some people don't want to, that's ok. Some people are, but it will take a while. We have to be patient.

Why do most Latin Americans coming from Spanish speaking counties, most only having a 5th grade educations like to taunt the English speakers calling us Anglo-Monolingual. This is not about being bilingual this is about wanting Spanish to be equal with English for now, and replacing it with Spanish at a later date

This is NOT an immigration question. Reported.
But it's so full of fallacies, I can't resist taking aim.
Most of my friends speak several languages, though few speak Spanish. I speak 3 myself...some Spanish.
There are no more "Anglo" mono-linguals than non-Anglo by percentage.
Most of the illegal Latinos I know are mono-lingual. They speak only Spanish and can't even read or write that.
They receive the best medical attention - funded by taxpayers - in Houston clinics known to refuse all but those who are obviously of the Latino community. No English. Spanish only.
Such practices are illegal but they just keep on going. An Ethiopian is dying of heart failure? Sorry, move along (they say in Spanish).
I don't suppose you'd like to do the honorable thing and turn 180 degrees, now. Admit your logic is failed and that your supposed "facts" are fabricated.
I didn't think so.

While I think it would be beneficial if we were brought up to be bilingual (so much easier to get a job/understand everyone) I don't think it should be manditory. If, for some reason, I moved to Spain, I would have to learn Spanish to get around. I wouldn't expect the country to learn English just because I am there. The US has such a multitude of languages, I feel that English should be learned by everyone as a "common language".

The unofficial, official language in the USA is english. Most immigrants speak their native language AND assimilate by learning english. It is the glue that binds us together linguistically. You can't expect everybody in the country to learn spanish. There are way more people from Italian, German, and other non-english speaking countries. We don't all learn their languages or have their languages everywhere.
It seems that many hispanic cultures don't want to assimilate.
btw-- I'm no Anglo nor am I monolingual.

what ever language that they want to learn. Most ppl here speak English. if someone chooses not to learn English then they must live with the consequences such a s failure in school and difficulty landing a job. With that being said I think Americans should be more bilingual but it should be a choice not a law.

Having traveled to fifty one different countries, I've often been embarrassed that everywhere I went, the people spoke at least two languages and usually English was one of them. They spoke my language but I couldn't speak theirs. I wish I wasn't so bad at learning languages because being multi-lingual is becoming more and more important in this world. By the way, there is a bunch of world outside the US for those of you who can't see beyond our borders.

If you move and live in another country, you need to learn the language of the land in order to survive. If you move to America, you should have a very good working knowledge of English. I don't care if you speak five other languages, just learn English if your planning on living here.
