While it would be good for all Americans to learn a foreign language, it should be expected that immigrants should learn English. They are only cheating themselves if they don't.
In college, I had a roommate from the Dominican Republic. After living in the US for 4 years, he STILL did not know English. Maybe the size and success of the Hispanic population is hurting new Spanish speaking immigrants? A Latino immigrant does ot have much incentive to learn English. However if you really want to move up in the U.S., English is essential.
I wouldn't expect the people and governments of France or Russia or Mexico to have to learn English to accomodate me. Do Hispanic immigrants expect us to learn Spanish to accomodate them?

True or false: There are 2 - and only 2 - languages on the planet? (false)
In the 1970's, the Vietnamese population grew rapidly (legal immigration) but we didn't all learn to speak Vietnamese. Has that led to our imminent demise? No.
So, should we all learn Spanish, now? No. But in a concerted effort to persuade these people to realize that they're getting benefits we never got - and that WE are paying for those benefits - it seems someone will HAVE to learn Spanish.
The Vietnamese never had organizations – much less public radio stations – called "Our 'Superior' Race" in Vietnamese. Spanish-speakers have "La Raza" which, judging by its motto - “For [our] race, everything; For all else, nothing” - means exactly that.
If anything, to be fair to speakers of the myriad languages that fuel this nation's inherent diversity, we'd do better to outlaw any language that appears poised to conquer our representative government and ideals of welcoming legal immigrants from all nations.
It is morally despicable to permit any group with the above motto to legally exist.
I say we save up money and ship 100 million Hindi-speaking workers here from central India and move them right on top of all these (Spanish-speaking, racist) communities.
Or, more reasonably, just demand a return to the original intent of the 14th amendment - that it not apply to children born of aliens and, therefore, that there should be no free money given them from taxes - extracted from us.

I do see your element and it incredibly is amazingly troublesome whether, different worldwide places accomodate individuals such as you wouldnt have confidence. very practically all different worldwide places communicate english and function warning signs published in english for American visitors. i think of that united statesa. has been soaking up the hispanic inhabitants because of the fact we are a melting pot. there's no longer one guy or woman right here which could say "We have been right here first bypass domicile" different than community individuals. subsequently their call. greater over, greater human beings communicate spanish international than english. English remains the language of organisation yet Spanish is starting to be the international language. Be Scared be very scared.

I don't know, I think everyone should learn English.
But I think it wouldn't hurt an American to learn another language besides only knowing English. I'm an American (of Mexican descent) and I also know Spanish and Italian, and soon Chinese. But my main point is that you can't force another language on people; not on the Americans, and certainly not on people who have just recently arrived here or have been here a long time or their whole life. Learning a new language is hard, very hard. That also goes along with assimilating to this country, some people don't want to, that's ok. Some people are, but it will take a while. We have to be patient.

They should learn English, because they came here, we did not go there.
But it is up to everyone what they chose to do. I only know a little spanish from one year that I took it in high school. If I were going to a country to live that only spoke Spanish, I would learn Spanish. I would not expect everyone to learn English for me.

Only when slugs fly faster than a jet.
If a Spanish speaking person comes into my business, he/she had better know very good English or they aren't getting my services what so ever. How much more plain does it have to be? If you're in my country learn to speak English!

We have immigrants from dozens of countries that immigrate here. They learn our language...not vice versa.
coragryph.
I have been to about 50 countries...I won't learn the language of every country I visit...beyond basic terms for communication. But if I plan to MOVE to a country...I will learn the language. You are referring to American TOURIST VISITORS to Europe. We do not have Americans moving to France or Italy PERMANENTLYand insisting that the entire country learn English to accommodate them.

No, hispanics should learn to speak english. Why should I have to adapt to the immigrants. They're coming to my country. If I moved to Mexico or Brazil, I'd have to learn Spanish or Portugese (respectively) in order to thrive there.
If I moved to italy, I'd speak italian (which I already do).
