my husband is getting out of the NAVY in July of 2008.
Is it possible for him to get a job now that he will start once he gets out?
When should he start job-seeking?

Attend a TAP briefing about a year out, with your husband. I'm not sure what they are called in the Navy, but they are transition briefings to help make the change easier. They'll discuss everything and anything, including job hunting. While they are primarily aimed at the active duty member, I know in the Air Force, spouses are highly encouraged to attend.

Good luck!!

If an employer is willing to wait for him he can do it. If he's after a Federal job he should start to apply 90 to 120 days before his discharge date.

I retired from the navy on December 31, 1997. I was hired for a good Federal job just before Thanksgiving. I retired, went home for the New Year's holiday and started my new job the following Monday.

He should start job seeking ASAP. But be advised it is illegal for any company to offer a contract if he is still in the service and not on Terminal Leave. Of course they can offer promises of a job, but I have had a personal friend get laid off while on Terminal Leave and had to fight to get back in the Army.

He needs to get orders to TAP class at least one year out from his discharge date. They will provide alot of useful information.
