HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. The virus causes the body's immune system to weaken, and therefore, a person with HIV is more prone to infections. HIV does not kill you; you can live up to 20 years with the virus in you. Once the virus weakens your immune system, and your CD4 cells are reduced to a certain number, a patient is considered to have AIDS. Now, with proper and available medical treatment, you can live for years with AIDS. The disease itself causes many other symptoms, and increases chances for other diseases, just like HIV does. When you have HIV, and you develop an oppotunistic infection, you're considered to have AIDS. So HIV does not kill you, AIDS does.

well youve already recieved a halpful link in another response, but let me just give you a short answer. AIDS, which is an advanced form of illness caused by HIV, weakens the immune system. Due to this weekness some one infected is much more susseptible to illnesses and therefore will likely die early. So, in summary, AIDS does not kill but its effects do.

Well, speaking precisely, no. The treatments for HIV are better than they have ever been, but there is still no known cure. Most people who are infected with HIV will eventually succumb to some kind of infection their body cannot fight, because their immune systems are debilitated. So in fact, no one actually dies from HIV; but HIV breaks you down so badly that other illnesses can kill you.

About 5000 people in Africa die of AIDS every month. Treatment is essential to stay alive. Full blown AIDS is almost always fatal. With treatment most people live for decades with HIV.
