Our friends dog had a litter of 9 puppies. They are all black some with a small white stripe on their chest.

It sounds exactly like my dog's situation. Her parents are a golden retriever and a chocolate lab, but for some reason she is all black with a small white stripe on her chest. All her brothers and sisters are brown. The reason it is possible for them to be black is because the chocolate lab probably had chromosomes that had the black color gene it. This gene was obtained from his/her parents, or even his/her great great parents etc.

Depending on the genes, a Labrador can produce golden, white-blond, black, or chocolate puppies. The Golden Retriever should only be shades of blond. It is possible that every single puppy would come out black, but also there are other factors, like the purity of the parents, are they mixed with any other breeds, stuff like that.

obviously it can happen. Lab colors are pretty variable. Breeding two chocolate labs can produce an entire litter of white labs. They all carry genes for every color. THe white stripe on the chest is cool too...that's a lab thing as well...every seventh generation they tend to have puppies with the stripe.

yes a golden retriever and choc lab can have black pups but the black is coming from the lab side of the family unless the retriever is not purebred

Yes, they can come out black. Labs come in a black color, so its probably coming from somewhere in the labs background.

mmm strange, ive seen different coloured labs having pups, and they have been like some golden and some black, but not a mixed coat , no. Are you sure the dad is the dad ?

Yes it can happen and looks like it did. It came from the Lab side.
