This is a very tricky question indeed - what to paint? If this is simply for an example of your skill, I suppose it does not matter what you choose. A skilled artist can turn any mundane object into a wonderful painting.
I think you should focus on what and how you would like to paint and base it around that. Do you like lots of different colors in your paintings? Do certain objects have special meaning to you that you would like to express? Does any object have interesting abstract compositional properties when focused on a certain part of it?
And I agree with the person above: you should try many objects and play with the lighting and such to find something that you like. I like painting people, so I would be cheap and paint a photograph (of a person) tacked to the wall with various other things tacked beside it (just to tell a story). but thats just me.

look around your house and gather objects of different sizes, colors and makeup- such as a clear glass, a piece of fruit, whatever appeals to you and arrange it in a pleasing composition, some objects in front of others etc. Then draw it on the canvas in light sketching motion- make sure to pay attention to the right proportions. Once you have it sketched out, proceed to mix the colors that you see and paint it, don't forget to have a light source/shadows showing in reflections on the top, side and bottom of the objects- usually color reflections will be the complementary color of the object- for instance an orange would have a bluish color shadow. Have fun with it!
Sincerely- artist and art teacher

I always find different kind of apples (red, yellow, green) cause I love the round shapes. U too should find urself and find which shapes ur much interested in? Squares? Triangles? Then u can find an object in that shape. And also the color is so important 4 example if u like blue u may like circles too (as u know red is for square, blue for circle and yellow for triangle). So just find ur own colors and shapes. Thats the most important part.

Create one... -A bowl of fruit, say. Find an interesting bowl from around your house, fill it with some fruit of YOUR choosing... -Find an arrangement of the fruit in the bowl that you think is interesting- and paint it. You can even give it a "name"...- Like; "The Grapes of Wrath", -or "The Orange Bowl"- something like that. It doesn't HAVE to be a "project"- you could have some "fun" with it. Good luck!

When I first started illustrating, I would cut a green pepper in half and concentrate on drawing the interior. It's an amazingly intricate object to draw and paint. Check it out...

Find something that you think is interesting.
Something that you actually have around the house.
Then experiment with lighting, drapery and other background elements - add things that you think would be fun (or challenging) to paint.
