Depends on your dogs background, if it was brought up with cats then it should be fine...that doesn't mean they won't try and chase other cats though. Its not a case of them 'hating' cats its more the preditary instinct for a dog to hunt, anything that runs to a dog is fair game unless its been taught otherwise, its all a learning curve for the dog and owner and depends on how much time you are prepared to put in with training etc. Some dogs however will never except cats it all depends on the indivual.

For some reason yes it is. If it worries you i'm sure a dog trainer or RSPCA will have some tips for you.

It may weel be worth remembereing that a rough cat will beat a dog any day when push comes to shove cats are much more intelligent, they take no notice of humans except on their terms.

I have fond memories of a very large cat hating dog which belonged to an aunt chased out of a back jigger by a small determined cat

No its not normal, all my dogs over the past 50 years have loved cats, so much so that the cats go for walks or in the car with the dogs, anywhere the dogs go so do the cats.

I can be seen walking through town with cats, dogs and ferrets, all on leads at the same time.

Generally dogs do hate cats. If kittens/cats and puppies are introduced slowly then you may stand a chance of having them get along. Normally, only if dogs and cats have grown up with each other then they can be tolerant of each other. I have a dog and two cats, and my dog would easily rip the cats apart if she has the chance.
