I paint with acrylics on canvas so i have gesso coming out of my ears lol, and I'm wanting to paint a very small 9 x4 inch pine box, but i dont want to have to go get wood primer if gesso will suffice.

Any help is appreciated, thanks

I would not think it would be a problem. Acrylic paint sticks to anything and that what gesso is , acrylic paint. You should not have any problems.
p.s. my friend did paintings on wood with acrylic paint and gesso and kept them outside for years and they lasted for years. It was in Chicago too so the weather conditions weere tough.

Acrylic Gesso makes a great primer BUT it does not seal the wood. Impurities from the wood can be absorbed into the gesso then into your paint which can result in damage such as discolouration.

If you have any acrylic varnish on hand, use it first to seal the wood, give it a light sanding when dry, then apply gesso.

when working with wood you should first treat it for bugs and coat it so that later on no bugs can get to it.
then apply the primer I don't know about the gesso I've never worked with gesso and wood.
Then apply the paint and then coated. With that you'll make sure that your paint will stay on it for as long as you want and that no bugs will go to it... ever!
I hope this helped
Take Care :-)

Yes. Be sure to sand before and after.
