The home office decided to change the colour in 1974 from black to yellow for ranks of Fireman, Leading Fireman and Sub Officer. It took most brigades around 5 years to fully comply (by 1979).
One exception was British Airports Authority Fire Service who did not change until 1986.

Damn it all Memsahib the Country is going to pot in more ways than one.
Seriously I have not realised that there was a change until now. I knew the old brass helmet had gone and a reinforced fibre as taken its place. It must be lighter on the head yellow is easily so anything which makes a fireman's life less dangerous must be welcome.

I was given 2 helmets from a station in Scotland back in the early 90's. One was yellow and one was white. I'm sure this shows the different ranks of the firefighter.
