Am I the only one who thinks the lady who said that to you was rude?! It wouldn't particularly make me want to go back either.

You will meet rude people wherever you go; that's reality. Why are people rude? People are by nature self-centered and not focused on others. (Why was she so shocked to see you? Do you have the reputation of being anti-church or anti-God?) Is it possible, though, that she didn't mean to offend you, but that she was surprised to see you and excited that you might come back and that your droll response was like a bucket of cold water?
Not all church people would respond as she did. If I knew you were not a believer and you came to visit my church, I would want you to feel welcome without feeling threatened. In fact, I do my best to make as many people feel welcome as possible. It's unfortunate the some people have difficulty doing that. Was there anyone there that treated you well, or was that one woman representative of the entire congregation?

Even if I went to an event with a speaker and disagreed, I would not have laughed out loud. I do have respect for those around me. Or I would have excused my self during the sermon. I have been to other houses of worship where I don't agree, but I do remain respectful. You replied to the woman the way you did....to get a response from her. You could have simple smiled and said "I came to see my chlid today".

She has the gaul to come over and say that to you, and then lecture you on your rudeness? Damn, sista gots problems, yo.
Yet another reason why I won't go to a church - the people there just aren't worth the time of day in too many instances.

Religion seems to be a thing that is close to people's heart. When you laughed during the sermon, you probably offended her. Nobody likes to be laughed at.
I woldn't know how to interpret her statement- "I am so shocked you came here, you think you will be back next week?".... was she shocked as in offended that you came? or was she pleasantly surprised that you were willing to come?
When she attacked you (telling you how rude you were), she probably felt she was simply defending her beliefs, in response to your laughter.

Taking religion out of it, if you were at a speech given by someone and you laughed wouldn't that be rude?
I too have laughed at church and gotten hell for it. But it really was my fault.

Imagine that I came to your house. Perhaps our children are friends, so, for their sake, we decide to call a truce for a bit.
(Good mothers, we are!)
We watch them play, we smile and encourage them...they have fun, and we are happy.
Then, perhaps you decide to serve coffee, and maybe, during the conversation, you air your views about my faith. I quietly listen, doing my best to keep a straight face...but at least once, I can't hold it back...I laugh out loud.
Later, when you ask me if I might like to come back, I frankly tell you "I seriously doubt it."
Now, tell me you wouldn't think I was being a rude b*tch?
Of course, as Christians, we ought to keep the door open for you, anyhow, and try to be as friendly as we can.
You, however, since you are not concerned with my beliefs, have every right and privilege to slam the door in my face...
and nobody...no, not even the most devout among us...would blame you.
'Nuff said, I hope?
And, may God bless you....

Religion is about emotional manipulation. Converts are so emotionally wrapped up in their superstition that any lack of reverence they see anybody else show towards it immediately provokes a strong negative emotional response. Their church is an emotional shelter for them and you disturbed it by showing lack of respect for it.
It would be like seeing your mom's boss yell at her for something when you were a kid visiting at work. The boss would seem very scary to you because you are emotionally attached to your mom.

Well I think you were right telling her the truth. To me saying she was shocked to see you was rude and judgemental.
