If you feed a good quality canned food such as those in the What to feed link, your cat can eat around 6 oz per day (one can of food).

It depends VERY much on the brand of food you're feeding.

If it's something from a supermarkets like Whiskas or Fancy Feast, even small amounts of it can make or keep a cat fat.

Be sure to use a high quality food like Iams or Hills. There are specific feeding guides on good foods - feed your cat the correct daily amount for the weight you want him to be, not the weight he is,

So was mine, till I started feeding him 1/3 cup dry A.M. and the same in P.M. Be sure to measure. I have a cup in the bag that is used, and always leveled off to insure proper amount. He's an indoor cat and went from 15 to 13 lbs. in a short amount of time.
