In effect, yes. By technical definition, no.

Socialized medicine is medicine provided by the govt to its citizens.

The military gets medical care from their employer, who happens to be the govt.

No. It's more like a system they used to use in the United States years ago where there was a factory doctor or a factory nurse and workers could get treated at work.

On the other hand, it resembles socialized medicine in that you get treated and keep your mouth shut. You get the medicine that's in stock at the military pharmacy whether there are 10 better (more expensive) alternatives available in a civilian pharmacy or not.

Family members get straight insurance via Tricare that can be used with any doctor or hospital. There can be copays and deductibles.

No they don't. Socialized medicine in the military would be funded by deducting a large portion of their paychecks, or out of someone else's paycheck if they couldn't afford it or just don't feel like working. The American taxpayer funds health care for the military in exchange for their service to our country.

The shambles of health care in the military resembles a socialized health care system, though.
