Okay so today my brother asked me what a tampon was. He is 11, almost 12. I wasnt sure weather i should tell him or not so i just told him it was a girly thing. He kept saying that i didnt know and that i didnt want to admit i was stupid, so i finally just walked away and went to my friends house. Guys, how old were you when you found out about this stuff? Girls, how old do you think a boy should be to know about this??

He is plenty old enough to know these things. He probably hears about it on tv or from girls his own age. It's really no big deal. Does he know about periods and sex? He should by this age. You two must be fairly close if he is coming to you for this type of information. Don't be embarassed and just give him the answers. I would, however, let your parents know that he is curious, just so they are aware.

That's a good time to say "go ask Mom"
When I was your age, my deaf great aunt was living with us. At that time, sanitary product meant the bulky napkin attached to a belt. Mom had found a special price on them for the three of us and they were stacked in the hall. Aunt Emma wanted to know what they were, but my sister's bf was sitting right at the foot of the stairs and I didn't want to yell such a personal answer right then. She insisted, so I finally did. The next day, Mom told me that Emma didn't know what they were, since in her day they had used rags!!

Your brother is old enough to know about these things (they've probably been discussed in "health class") But he needs to ask your parents and not you, because obviously you are not going to give him an educated well informed KNOWLEDGABLE answer, you're going to say "it's just a girly thing".

O yes i think he is plenty old enough. He should def know now he probably should have already known. I know it is kind of an awkward thing to talk about with him. But you don't want him to be all naive and lost in the dark about stuff.

I learned about periods in 5th grade as apart of Family life. Just tell him that it is something a women uses when she has her period. If you don't want to tell him like that just tell him that he will learn it in 5th, 6th , or 7th grade. I would feel uncomfortable talking to someone about personal information about a woman's body. He will have to learn about it and be like ewwwww. But that is life. But think about he is your brother if he really wants to know tell him the truth. I mean it would be his fault, since he asked you, you should be truthful.

well he'll probably be hanging out with girls who have a period at that age so now would be a good time to talk to him about it and why it happens. don't exclude him from all the fun stuff girls have to go through lol

i wouldnt worry too much. he probably heard two girls talking and was wondering what thy were talking about. Its not going to hurt him to find out. once he knows he will be disinterested and not ask about it or wonder about it anymore. my brother found out when he was about that age and he just said eewe and didnt care to think of them again

See what happens when you try to "skirt" an issue? More issues come up! Just tell him what it is. He is old enough to know and I'm surprised that he doesn't know. My son is 9 and he knows.

If they are so curious to know then just tell him that it's for girls when they are on their menstrual period. If he wants more details then tell him to ask your dad or mom.
