I think my wife's ex may have in some way "bugged" our house. He has often said things to my wife that only she and I have spoken about in the privacy of our own home. We already discovered a keylogging program he installed on her old computer and friends of his has warned us that he might have placed some sort of eavesdropping devise in the previous house that we now occupy. Our funds are limited so we are limited to as much "do-it-yourself" as possible. Any advise?

If you're handy with electronics, this page has instructions on DIY electronic surveillance detectors: http://www.discovercircuits.com/B/bug-dect.htm

most bugs are very simple to detect. This is because like all electronics they need electricity to work. There are 2 types of bugs the first is battery powered, these are harder to find but do to a batteries not lasting they have to be replaced pretty much everyday. These aren't used to much because of the risk involved in rreplacing them. The most commonly used ones are easy to locate, they need power, take off the face plates of electrical outlets in you house look for anything extra in the box. You should also check light switches and the lights themselves. All you need to do this is a screw driver.
If you see anything other then wire, the electrical outlet, the switch, or the light fixture, its probably a bug, there shouldn't be anything else in there

Keep your personal discussions on the same topic and only talk about this at home. Make it something really mundane and speak for real in the shower or while playing loud music to muffle your voices. Have someone else stay in your house for a few days and pretend to be you. Get a new computer, or only use the one you have for really stupid, mundane things. The ex will sooner or later give up monitoring you.

There are tons of websites teaching simple coutersurveillance techniques and bug searching. You could start by doing a sweep of the entire house looking for bugs, recorders, cameras, etc. For example, a simple place for a bug is inside the phone receiver.

This might be a little far-fetched, but you might also consider a call to your attorney. Advise them of your suspicions and perhaps a letter of warning might be issued to the ex. Additionally, you might consider 'selling' the home. It is obvious he is jealous and has an evil streak to want to know your discussions and personal communications and actions.

You might also contact the police and ask them for assistance. They can advise also on a legal level of what your rights are.

There are spy shops that supply electronic bug detectors for about $50. There are also systems that look for illegal cameras fairly cheaply.

All these bugs have to broadcast their signal, which is a radio signal. You may not have the equipment at home to sense all of that signal band, but you can buy equipment that will let you do it.

Stage a discussion in the house that is never discussed with ANYONE else or in public. If he comes up with some info from that conversation, call the cops. I would lean to the fantastic but yet believable for the conversation.
