Hi biolifecutie,
I think you've already done something choosing that name!
Well, what we all can do is reduce our greenhouse footprint, i.e. try to "produce" as little CO2 as possible in our everyday life.
I've never owned a car and I do not intend to buy one, which is almost superhuman for an American! ;)
And I always disconnect all my appliances from the plug because they even consume energy (= produce CO2) on standby.
I also switched from the local electricity supplier to an ecological one, even though this one is slightly more expensive per kwh used (but since I do not use that many, I don't really spend more)...
Being aware of the fact that we do have a problem is the first step towards a solution.
I admire you for your "tag" question "What can I do?" because this is exactly the question to ask if you want to know about any progress in this field: Blaming politicians is easy, doing things yourself can be pretty hard. And even if others think that we cannot cancel out all the negative effects of super industrial nations: Let's face it, NATIONS are made of PEOPLE, and WE ARE PEOPLE!
So whoever does whatever he or she can to help is FAR better than any pessimist who blames the planet's fate on things "he/she" can't (or doesn't want to!) change.
Good luck to you,
I think there is progress as long as people ask questions as you do!
All the best
Anna

We are making progress but as you can imagine, it's a slow process. There's a lot of things going on 'behind the scenes' and although these aren't secrets they're not very often reported by the media. This can sometimes give the impression that nmo-one is really attempting to address the issues.
There are no simple or quick solutions. The changes that people make in their lifestyles are a contrinution to reducing the effects of global warming and this is certainly helping but by itself it's not a solution.
For it to be a solution would mean making such radical changes to they way we live our lives that it would be like going back in time by 200 years.
So many of the things we do and so many of the products and services we rely on contribute to global warming in one way or another. Even if we were to, for example, produce all our power from renewable sources and fine an alternative to oil it wouldn't be enough to stop global warming.
There are many schemes that are currently being investigated and some of these are outlined in the link below. Primarily they concentrate on ways to remove greenhouse gases from the atmopshere or reduce the amount of heat we receive from the sun.
There are things that we can all do as individuals which will help reduce the effects of global warming, again, see the link below.

Ok, there have been some really great suggestions so far in response to this question, about how to reduce your CO2 and live 'greener' and kudos to those people. However, there are some idiots here who are trying to tell you that global warming is not happening. Biolifecutie, listen to me when I say this... 98% of scientists agree that global warming is happening, but the opinions of the very few dissenters is being given equal weight, which is ridiculous. There have been documents signed by over 100 Nobel laureates urging the world's nations to take action against this very real threat. This is not fear-mongering, its just facts. Good for you for asking what you can do, if everyone just takes a few small steps in the right direction, we have a chance to make a better future for ourselves. Be proactive!
Peace and much love

Yes progress is being made to show the people what hoax this whole thing is. The best you can do is educate yourself and come to the realization that we are panicking over nothing. Global warming is nothing more than a tool of the anti-capitalist movement to push their socialist/communist agenda. If global warming was actually serious, why is China getting a free pass when they happen to be the biggest so called "polluters" in the world?

You keep hearing negative things about global warming because it is a highly controversial topic.
The fact of the matter is, global warming is merely a scare tactic. Who do you hear talking about global warming the most? Politicians right? They want to frighten you into believing that we're doomed, and then they want to claim to have the answer. What they want is your vote.
You need to educate yourself and form an opinion on the matter yourself.
You could start by reading this article: http://www.canadafreepress.com/2006/harris061206.htm
Not all scientists believe global warming is real. What do you choose to believe?

You can seek out the real truth of the matter from reputable scientific sources such as NASA, instead of listening to the rhetoric and hype from politicians on both sides.
A little tip is that you should take any information from sources like Al Gore and even the IPCC with a grain of salt. They make their money from pushing one side of the issue. The same goes for websites that end in ".com" and for wikipedia. Look for information in peer-reviewed scientific journals, textbooks and ".org" and ".gov" sites.

Global warming is only a problem because we like the climate the way it is....that and so many people live so close to ocean.

I keep hearing negative things about the ":concept" of global warming. The earth warms up and cools down in cycles. we were on a down cycle in the mid-seventies. We are on an up cycle now. The global warming concept is just something that those with liberal political leanings are using to line their pockets.

its naive of humans to believe that :
a) we cause global warming .
b)that we can stop or slow it down.
Its like saying that humans are responsible for the earths rotation and that if every one takes one step to the right at 6 pm Greenwich time that we can slow the rotation and get longer days.
silly just silly
The negativity of the things you hear are just fear tactics. The people sponsoring this initiative are human haters! they want humans to stop being human and regress to cave man lifestyles so that they can once again have power over every one.
their mantra...one world..... one people ......one culture
pretty much like totalitarianism

The United States under Pres. Bush has not only avoided reducing our own greenhouse gas emissions, but undermined the entire world's efforts to reduce them. Other countries and some individual states have made a little progress, but we need a president who will take action on the issue.
What you can do is minimize your own greenhouse gas emissions (don't use a lot of electricity, don't take too many car trips, etc.), make other people aware of the issue, and support politicians who make global warming a top priority. For example, in the 2008 election John Edwards has the best plan to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, so I support him.
