What organ is responsible for purring in cats?

There isn't one. It's one of the mysteries that scientists don't know for sure. There are many theories to explain how the purr is generated. One study determined that purring involves activation of nerves within the voice box. These nerve signals cause vibration of the vocal cords while the diaphragm serves as a piston pump, pushing air in and out of the vibrating cords, thus creating a musical hum. Veterinarian Neils C. Pederson, author of Feline Husbandry, believes that purring is initiated from within the central nervous system and is a voluntary act. In other words, cats purr only when they want to.

Dead cats don't purr so scientists have to guess since the cats don't have a purrbox.

No one's exactly sure how purring works, but we do know it isn't a specific organ.

The general thinking is that it's vibration of muscles - It could be all muscles, or select ones throughout the body. If you stroke your cat, you can feel the purring pretty much all over, though if you put a finger on her throat it feels more concentrated there. I used to call this bit the 'purr box' when I was little!! Possibly the muscular vibration is more concentrated here.

i was just asking this question the other day. no one really knows the answer. i think its the purrbox and maybe something to do with vocal chords in the neck. thats my assumtpion. a cat purrs when its happy ^..^

Know one really knows the answer. They can send people to the moon, yet no one knows why or how cats purrrrrr.

All we know is that we enjoy the sound. It's relaxing and they are telling us they are happy.

its the throat you know when your throat itches thats kind of what cats do but they do it when there happy
