Sometimes when addicts are caught and thrown into jail, that's when they realize that they need help.... without prisons, what would convince an addict to quit??
Laws don't create monsters... without laws we would have total anarchy, and people would do whatever they want.. stealing, killing, etc... crime rates would explode!!!! Creating a law and enforcement system shows people when they do something wrong, they will pay the consequences. Becuase really, who WANTS to go to jail?

TO: Matt of O'Reilly - wouldn't tobacco also be considered a 'plant'? The govenment found a way to tax tobacco - cigarettes. Also, I agree that this is a moral and legal issue. And then, all drugs don't follow violence in itself - it's the sellers who take issue and eventually turn their own system of drug sales into violence, terriorism and death. The office of the police, etc. was established within the communities as a 'service'and to enforce laws that the people made. We have to give law enforcement more credit than they get. There was a time that police and other officials got 'respect'. I honestly believe that in time, just like with alcohol -prohibition finally relaxed that code and depopulated the gangters who 'had' the control over its sales - and put the sales and manufacturing in the hands of others where taxes could be issued; one of these fine days, marijuana will be legalized. About 10 states have legalized the use 'with physicians' support.
Millions of dollars are also distributed to programs which support these addicts to help them get clean and join the rest of us in maintaining our lives as best we can without the use of drugs.
Hopefully, someone will find the answer. But don't bet on it being suitable for everyone.

They don't create jobs for jailers. We don't have enough room for the scum we have now. They actually let people go early due to crowding in jails. They're not building bigger jails so why need more people. No extra jobs for police either. some states are having problems keeping cops, like Arizona who actually has gone to the streets trying to recruit people. And lawyers have always been a dime a dozen, they're everywhere. Yeah the laws suck, they seem to be backward they are more in favor for scum than law enforcement that's why no one wants to be a cop.

Addicts are always addicts, even after they quit. Prohibition is bad for drug users, but the government can't end it. Marijuana, for example, is a plant. You can't patent a plant. Therefor you can not tax a plant, thus the government won't make any money off of it.

Everyone makes more money off of illegal drugs, do you really care if an addict overdoes them-self? Look at what happens when they decide to quit. A note I sent to head of local methadone clinic when they celebrated their 3rd anniversary;
A few months ago I was happy to meet a client of your clinic that informed me she was now attending classes at a local college because of your services. I will refer to her as Kim (not her real name). Even though she was terrified of relapsing, Kim said she had agreed to start having her methadone dosage lowered. Kim still had much guilt and low self-esteem because of her addiction, but I saw a real sparkle in her eyes as she spoke of her future. Kim also said it was not right for some of your clients to be able to receive such a high dosage of methadone for so many years without an end in sight.
Your clinic’s have a problem similar to the welfare office where a girl will get pregnant just to stay on welfare. You have some girls in the welfare system who are getting pregnant so they do not have to pay the clinics little five dollar a day service charge. You also have some that are getting pregnant just to be first in line to receive methadone. Babies born to a mother on methadone usually arrive during the eighth month of pregnancy. It is rare for these premature newborns not to be put into neonatal intensive care while they battle to live and experience a painful withdrawal from methadone.
Who pays for a lifetime of medical bills on this poor child who never asked to be born and was just created so their mother could get methadone? I think the tragedy that results from your clinic far outweighs your success stories. As a Catholic I offer you a partial solution; mandatory birth control for the girls on methadone and also for the girls using the welfare system. Please do it for the future of the children and society as a whole.
