It's his mess. Listen to him when he wants to talk, and make yourself available to help him. But let him take the ball in getting himself back into old form.

Be there to support him..hopefully he let her go and can get himself together and move on. Be a buddy and help get him out and about (not dating but not sitting around the house moping) to distract him. It'll take time for him to get over it.
