If Islam is supposed to be peaceful, why then did terrorist claiming to be followers of Islam highjack several aircraft, and run them into buildings killing thousands? Why do the Muslims here in the US not publicly condemn these terrorists?

You ought not to decry a culture simply because of lunatics that exist within it...the same can be said of almost every religion in the world....it was christian terrorists that blew up the building in Oklahoma killing scores, children included, they considered themselves devout Christians. Do you blame all Christianity for the actions of those few?
However, I do agree with you that muslim americans are being oddly silent, and they worry me, almost to the extent that I am beginning to understand why americans put japanese americans in internment camps during world war two. If you won't stand up and be counted, then how can you be trusted? Speak out American muslims, or risk losing your ability to speak at all.

Terrorists are evil. They are not evil because they are Muslim they are evil because that is simply the way they are.
Even more evil than what terrorists did is the bombing of Hiroshima. 9/11 killed 3,000 people. Those bombs killed 800,000+. But, of course, American lives are more valuable than the lives of citizens of other countries.

well as a muslim, we condemn it but in some mosques are run by terrorists and teach ppl to die for islam.
you know u see muslims killing muslims in some countries.
