Why do you need a 'besides' for taking him to the vet? It's the thing to do, especially when you don't know what's wrong!

There are many things it could be - something stuck down inside the ear where you can't see, or on the flap of the ear, or an ear infection or ear mites - or even fleas!

Go to a vet and discover the source of the problem.

call your local vet and ask the nurse there usually if they are not busy they will tell you some of the over the counter products you can find and try and then in several days if it does not heal the problem then bring the doggie in- My vet and assistants are great and not just out to charge a person the visit fee! They really care about animals and know that alot of people just need the med. without all the extra $$$- They recommended No-Mo ear drops for my min-pin and worked like a charm in 5 days! ( can get it at the vet office or local pet store) If it doesn"t work then Vet !!!!!!!

I would say he probably has an ear infection, my dog did this alot when she had an ear infection. I dont think theres anything you can do other than taking him to the vet, unless you have some antibiotics at home to start him on. Did the ear feel warm when u looked inside, if it did than he probably also has fever so i would go ahead and take him to the vet.

You answered your own question. I am sure you love your dog. He probably has motes or an ear infection. Dogs with long ears or who go in the water a lot can easily develop an ear infection...Your veterinarian will look into the dog.'s ear with a lighted scope and find the trouble, and prescribe the proper medication.

Your dog probably has "Ear Mites". You can't see them because they are too deep inside the ear. You can get medication to rid him/her of these pesky creatures either from your vet or in most grocery or pharmacy stores, or pet stores. You will need to redo the treatments about once a month.

Sometimes a fox-tail or even a bug can get down there. In that case you still may have to go to the vet. You can try to flush the ear out. Try this website it may be able to help you as well.. http://www.canismajor.com/dog/thlthvet.html Hope this helps...All the best;~)

If he is a floppy earred dog his ears probably need to be cleaned. Take him to the vet...they can give you a cleaning solution and drying solution. To tell if he has a problem, lift his ear and smell...if it stinks...go to the vet.

if you don't have any of them problems going on that others told you to look for, it could be as simple as this. do you scratch him near the ears a lot? it feels good to them in small amounts occassionally, but if you do it too much, it can irritate a dog's ears and they will act just like you are describing.

Your dog could have something in the inner ear canal or he can have ear mites which are hard to see.

it sounds to me like your dog has fleas, i would wait 1-2 days and if your pet continues to scratch his ear than i would take him to the vet for examination
