As a past recruiter it only plays a small part. Ask your recruiter where there is a need(besides basic seaman)
You may not get a nuc. job but you have choices.

DO NOT GO IN UNRATED!!!!

Yes, the ASVAB is timed and you can't use a calculator. The test isn't too bad but that depends on your test taking skills and general knowledge of various subjects. I recommend getting one of these prep books
It can make a big difference in how well you do since you'll know exactly what to expect on the test. The higher your score, the more opportunities you'll have and the better jobs you can qualify for so don't take the test lightly just because some people say it's easy. There's a big difference between doing okay and doing extremely well.

The prep/study book will get you used to the timing of the test so you know how long to spend on each question and get used to the time pressure you'll be under. They give you everything you need to know to do well. Good luck!

You're overall score means nothing in any service, other than you passed the minimum qualifying score.
To the army recruiter who says the army is the only service who can lock in a job. You're a damn liar, get your facts straight. The navy locks in a job before the applicant swears in at meps. To the person stating do not go undesignated. This near impossible nowdays, as we just dont have the manning requirements anymore. If you know a breakdown of your scores, you can email me and i can tell you what you qualify for.

When I served in the Navy I went undesignated. Low score perhaps. Yeah I started as a basic seamen. It is what you put into it is what you got of it. For example, going to bootcamp I volunteered to lead my company who new I would leave as E2 because of it. On a ship, they have a Guidenance Counsler on board. Get with them, you can learn any rate on a ship if you put the effort. I stayed onboard dury liberty hours to get my PQS book signed on the rate I wanted. In just about a year I went designated as MAA and made Petty officer 3rd class in a year in a half. Its all there, take advantage of the courses they can offer.

Point is, never let them tell you how your stuck in that rate. Anything goes on a ship!!

It is not an asvab score, it is a AFQT score and it is only used to determine if you can enlist, not what jobs you can do.

The AFQT only uses 4 of the 9 areas tested on the asvab test.

Your individual area scores will determine what jobs you can do.

So get them and ask your question again.

Average is 31-49. What is also important to any branch and job is also the line scores. Different branches score these differently, but its the same general idea.

Remember that the Army is the ONLY branch that can lock soldiers into a job prior to leaving for Basic. Make sure if your given any promises that they are in writing in your contract!

The best person in the Navy to ask that question would be a recruiter. Stop by a recruiting office and talk with one.

Getting a high score is good, but you want things in WRITING, if you can get it. Remember that. DO NOT believe promises. Ask your local recruiter what can be done for you. remember if you want an even higher score, you can always retest for the asvab. Just remember, get it in WRITING!
