The general rule is up to one year for misdemeanor offenses and three years for felony offenses.

A problem with the courts and law enforcement, however, is the longer a victim takes to report an offense, the less it is considered an important issue if the victim didn't report it immediately.

Many think by filing a police report the offender will not bother them. Some think by filing a report will result in retribution from the offender. This is not the norm. In fact, it's been my experience that when an offender goes to jail for their misadventures....they no longer bother the victims.

When the victim fails to pursue the issue...the offender takes that as an opportunity to further harass a victim knowing the victim will not file charges.

Best wishes.

Check with the state. It will depend on the crime. A misdemeaner can be for 90 days or a year, a felony for five yrs. A capitol crime be forever.
