There are many factors when determing how much coverage will cost for a 16 year old driver. Some companies will charge a premium because statistics show younger drivers cause more accidents. The type and age of car is also a factor. Ask your current agent if there is a good student discount. Also find out if you can rate the 16 year old as an occasional driver on one of your current vehicles. Assuming you add the 16 year old to your current policy, and the discounts are available, your coverage will not increase by much.

Insurance premiums vary according to the ZIP CODE in which you live. Also, some states have higher premiums than others because of the traffic density and peculiarities of how their data was collected. It also depends a great deal on what kind of car you are insuring and how many drivers the car has. Call a couple of insurance companies and ask for a quotation. Then change the type of car and the amount of insurance you wish to purchase. It is a complex subject and a 16 year old male driver with an Overall scholastic average of "B" usually gets a break. However, if you are a two car family with a $50,000 new car and a $2000 older car for the 16 year old, you may find a two or three car family has the better insurance rate.

If they are getting a car, have your name on the title, if they are not they are listed as an occasional driver. Mine did not go up that much at all, and insure that the insurance company knows he is straight A student and has had drivers Ed, there is usually a better rate for that. Here in PA I have Erie,, and have had for over 20 years, they are the best. I have also instilled in my children the importance of having a good driving record by showing them my insurance bills, which they of course compared to others. Have an 04 Pontiac, an 03 Kia (son's) and full coverage for less than $600 each a year. Just added an 07 Chevy (daughters) but have not gotten the bill yet.

I'm not quite sure given your situation how much you will be paying, but quaranteed Progressive will be the least expensive for you, seeing you are young. They basically built that company around young drivers, good luck!
