Please note that some authorities believe that tartans are exclusively associated with Scottish clans and that any Internet site selling specific tartans for specific Irish surnames is defrauding consumers.

Accordingly, if you wish to purchase a tartan associated with an Irish surname, if you really want to be authentic, purchase a tartan associated with the county where the family originated instead. For example, the Daughertys originated in Donegal, so a Daugherty might want to purchase a tartan associated with that county. Actually, this scheme gives potential buyers a much wider choice of patterns and colors.

Of course, the Scots-Irish, or Ulster Irish, came, for the most part, from Lowland Scotland originally, so those Americans of Scots-Irish descent may wish to wear their clan's tartan pattern--if indeed they belong to a clan. Most clans originated in the Highlands of Scotland, however.

By the way, before 1746, tartans weren't necessarily associated with a particular clan anyway. Men who wore kilts simply chose the patterns they liked. Clan tartan patterns were assigned to different clans beginning in the Victorian era as an advertising gimmick when the Prince of Wales toured Scotland. After the Battle of Cullodeen, kilts, tartans, bagpipes, and anything else remotely Celtic was banned until the late 19th century.

Today, anyone who wants to wear a tartan pattern in a kilt may do so. Indeed, even the state of Texas has its own tartan of bluebonnet blue. Yea ha! (Please don't tell George W.)

It is ususally a Scottish Tartan. I do not know where you were told Irish. I am Scottish nine ways and a Scottish/Irish Historian. I can tell you were to get Scottish Tartans. But Irish Tartans, that is a head-shaker for me.

never heard of an Irish Tartan. Make your own if you know your clans colors. The original tartans were 10 yards of plaid and they laid them on the floor over their belts and hand pleated them. Then laid down and pulled the tartan around them, belted and held on the top by a pin.

Try google....."tartan" and read about it.
