Well, that depends on what you are doing with your dog? Dogs that are going to be working dogs or athletes like agility, herding, etc... should not be neutered or spayed until after their growth plates close. That usually occurs around 18-24 months of age.

So, if you are going to be working with your dog at strenuous exercise type activities, then I would wait to spay the dog until the growth plates close.

And, if you are going to do that type of training/working... you should not start them on anything strenuous like running, jumping, etc. until then either. This helps their bones develop properly, so you don't have problems with them later- like arthritis, etc. at an early age.

You can find lots of info about this topic, if you do a couple of google searches.
Good luck.

Both dogs and cats, male and female, should be neutered from 5 months of age. Anything before that is a little early and only done in special cases, like for instance if a female animal has fallen pregnant at a very young age.

5 months is ideal for a male dog, most will hardly have developed sexual behaviours and it will not therefore make any difference to them - except to save them from prostate and testicular cancer in the future of course!

Most vets recommend that you spay/neuter your dogs around six months. Just call your vet and ask them about what age they prefer to neuter dogs and check on the cost and any pre-surgical requirements (like current vaccinations).

Usually at six months and vaccines are done and up to date.
