Do bug shields on the front of a truck's hood really keep bugs from impacting the windshield and making a mess?

YES, they work very well, first they make a shield from stones, and other crap that would hit the hood to changing the air flow over the hood to kicking up most things that would go right into the car/truck.

The top of the hood is usually they area where turbulence forms in the whole areo air thing, and its here that most stuff is sucked in to the car.

Adding the guard will save your paint on your hood and cut down on the amount of stuff that makes its way to your windshield.

It will make your car/tucks looks last longer, be sure to get a good one , not a $12 one size fits all thing.

Good Luck

Yes they do. They take many of the stone strikes but they really cut down on the bug deaths. By creating a low pressure area behind the shield you induce a turbulent airflow along the hood and up the windshield - the bugs are either splatted on the shield, sucked in a few inches above the shield in the initial disturbance or they have trouble penetrating the rolling air as it tries to smooth out along the windshield.

If you want to try something fun do a string test. Get a roll of string and a roll of painters tape. Cut the stings into 6" strands and tape them in a pattern on your hood and windshield. Then drive around and look at the movement of the strings. Then add a deflector and drive the same speed and see what happens.

The deflector should make the strings flap all over the place. Without a deflector you should see a much more stabilized flow across the hood and windshield.

They help but don't expect them to keep ALL the bugs off your windshield.
