It's probably through Dutch into Afrikaans from the Scandinavian languages. From Afrikaans in South Africa it probably spread through the West Indies/ Caribbean, and from the Caribbean into Southern US?

The Dutch use the word melk for milk.

A friend of mine was taking a spanish vocabulary test. It has food items on there like apple juice (juego de manzana) or orange juice (juego de anaranjado). He got to milk and could not remember the word for it (leche). He finally just made up an answer that got his teacher laughing pretty good.

Juego de vaca
Cow Juice

*Disclaimer: I am not an expert in spanish so if my translations are off then oh well. They were good enough to get the idea of my friends experience across.

Maybe south? Lots of people say melk instead of milk, worsh instead of wash, and pellow instead of pillow. Kinda annoying, but whatever.

You don't say where you're from. This pronunciation is common in the West Midlands in England.

It's just cultural & there's nothing wrong with that. ... anyway, she knows what you meant. if she's merely pointing it out ... that's ok but if she's doing it to degrade you than that's a different story
