The thing to avoid when dieting is a diet.

I know that's kind of a smarty-pants answer, but it's true.

The only way to lose weight is to take in less calories than you burn off, and the only way to keep the weight loss gone or dropping is to do it for the rest of your life.

When you start to diet, you will lose weight. You're eating less calories than you're supposed to be eating, and the results will be quick. However, behind the scenes your body is working out a way to take everything you are putting into it and store it as energy (i.e. fat) so as you continue to starve it, it has something to burn as energy. You also can't eat just cabbage soup, protein, soy, vegetables (you can insert the main ingredient of any fad diet here) and maintain that for the rest of your life.

Eat smaller portions of food more frequently, get more exercise, and can the diet. You won't lose 10 pounds in a month, you'll lose more like 5 or 6, but you'll continue to lose that 5 or 6 pounds a month until your body decides that you've lost all of the weight it will allow you to lose. You'll also keep it off. As you are exercising, you'll gain more lean muscle mass, which burns more fuel than fat, and you'll actually start eating a bit more. Totally opposite the idea behind a diet!

Good Luck!

Don't completely avoid anything. A balanced diet and exercise work best. It's usually best to avoid sodas, however. I've heard that even diet sodas hinder weight loss. Drink lots of water, and eat lots of fruit and veggies. Good luck!

When dieting, you have to avoid anything greasy and sweet; you need to drink a lot of fresh water, and do physical exercise as well.

Well red meats, foods high in sugar, fizzy drinks and pastries. White bread, white pasta and noodles aren't great because they will affect your blood sugar as quickly as regular sugar. Instead go for Brown pasta and bread - they contain more fibre too and are altogether healthier. Make sure you eat lean meats like chicken, turkey and eat fish so you make sure you get enough protein.
