All the newer DVD players should play DVD-r with no problems. However, you should know that the DVD-r must be finalized in order for it to be playable. Also if the DVD player is very old it is possible it will not play any recorded DVD's.

Some earlier generation DVD players (or the first of CD players for that matter) just can't read burned discs. If it's not one of the earlier players then you may have gotten unlucky and just gotten a machine that prefers dvd+r. Check it in a few other players, maybe at a local electronics store on TV's with built in DVD players. If it won't play in any of those, then you might have either gotten a bad disc, or didn't burn it to set top DVD player standards.
