This is impossible to answer without knowing you, your family, or your future sister in law.

Personally, I would choose something light hearted, fun, and perhaps a little 'joke-y'. For example, if everyone in your family likes to go fishing, give her a fishing pole or fishing hat. Something that says 'welcome' and 'you are part of our family'. But, that is me, and even then, it is dependent on person I am giving the gift to.

I got my sister in law to be a sign to hang by the front door that says Smiths est. June 23, 2006. Her last name with wedding date. It was from me to her and I put in the card... now we have the same name.

How about a family tree listing her and your brother?

A friend of mine's family has a tradition of presenting the bride with a 'Family' bowling shirt at the reception.

Stationary in her new name.

A recipe box with all the 'family secret' recipes.

A scrap book about your family - likes, wants, needs of your family members, their pictures - a gift card to salon :)

What a sweet idea! You could get her an engraved bracelet with "Mrs. (her future last name)" on it. On the card, put "welcome to our family!" You giving her something with her new name on it will be very symbolic that you're glad the two of you will share a last name!

of course the registry is always a good bet.

but you could make a family album of pictures of that past to show her what your family use to do and suchies, then add current pictures of her with your family in there, so she feels like she is apart of the family.

A nice necklace with her new initials on it would be nice or something with her new last initial. Something dainty and sweet.
