It always amazes me how often the people who support us and serve us end up being invisible. Think about the janitor who empties your wastebasket at work, the sacker at the grocery store, the barista or cashier at Starbucks. Smile, look them in the eye and say something to encourage them.

If you already do that, you’re kick’en ***!

I’m off to find some lunch. Chicken mole sounds like the ticket today.

Grimmy, (can I call you Grimmy?) you're right. I used to work in food service and the majority of people who came in there barely looked me in the eye. You would not believe how many people don't even say please or thank you! Just about every order started with a "Give me a ..." or "I want..." . It's basic manners. I make sure to be polite when I go out because I know one rude person can totally put a bummer on your day.

I'm glad you're bringing this up... how often it tickles the socks off of the people who support us when you simply thank them for their hard work... like those who scrub and polish the floors, etc. at the hospitals and clinics... the police officers, the EMTs, the firefighters... people nobody cares about until it's right in their face that they need them.

Thank you for reminding all of us.

I try to do that wherever I go. Those kind of jobs must be so boring and monotonous, and I know how much it helps to have a friendly person to not be in such a rush and take a moment to smile and say hello and thank you.

I agree with you. I believe that everyone should have to work 6 month in a retail or any job where you are dealing constantly with the public.

Are you willing to share the mole?????

I've been a hotel room cleaner, retail clerk, barmaid, waitress, and a host of other like jobs.

Believe, me I treat all people like they're, well, people. I remember how much I hated being "invisible" and never to that to anyone.

lol...so now you're humble AND sweet? You may have to change your avatar to something cute & frilly.

Aw, Grim. You're in a sweet mood today.

I always try to be nice to people in service jobs, because I know from retail experience how much people suck. Customers are rude, difficult, demanding and a necessary evil.

I already do. A great indicator of what kind of person you are is how nice you are to the people that you don't "have" to be nice to.

Just to let you know, I look for it when I interview candidates. I'll take them out to dinner and watch how they treat the waiter.

that shouldn't be something that needs to be developed as a habit, it should come naturally as part of being a decent human being. Smile at someone, you might get something nice in return. Treat people as you want to be treated.

I think it's good manners to at the very least, acknowledge someone who has done you a service,
paid for or not,
"deserved" or not,
intended or not

"acknowledge" can take many forms

bad manners can too

ps "nice question"

Every where I go I try to leave a smile. You're kick'en, too, along with anyone else who encourages. Thank you, we need more like you.
