I want to live in the West Village, love the older buildings. The boyfriend wants to live elsewhere. Are there any neighborhoods in the city similar to the Village, with a more reasonable rental rate?

Thanks much.

That's what I figured.

Does anyone know anything about Greenpoint? Are the surrounding neighborhoods safe? Does it have a good commercial strip of restaurants/bars?

Thanks again.

To answer your questions, not really. New Yorkers search forever looking for that perfect apartment, so it can be tough to snag a good one for a reasonable price.

I would check out Carroll Gardens, Boreum Hill or Cobbel Hill in Brooklyn. It's similar feel to the West Village, but a little cheaper.

A 1 bedroom will run you about 1500-2000 in those neighborhoods, which is still not cheap, but cheaper than the Village.

Good luck.

Very few apartments on Long Island. Your best bet would be either in Westchester or Bergen County, New Jersey. Also try Hoboken and Jersey City, both across the river from Manhattan. As far as the West Village, there are brownstones in Park Slope and Red Hook Brooklyn.
