i have a 99 nissan v-6 frontier and im getting bad gas milage but i have noticed at 70 mph im running at about 28-2900 rpms is this normal the only other thing i think it could be is a torque converter but how would i check to see if it is messed up

If the car is moving and not jerking at all the torque converter is fine. rpms sound about right try changing the air filter and getting a tune up. Also they are putting a lot more ethanol in gasoline now which reduces the mileage we get now.

Carefully watch each shift there should be four and a 5 to 7 hundred RPM drop after the 4 th gear that is the torque converter clutch engaging. Box shaped trucks don't do so good at 70 mph and up wind resistance. 15 in town and 17 to 21 highway is all you should expect.
