You might be able to pay the fine without apearing in court. You may also be able to hire an attorney to appear for you.
But if the court says you have to appear, you had darn better be there. If you are not there when you are supposed to be, a "default" warrant may be issued for your arrest. Then, in addition to the original fine, you would have to pay bail, pay the cost of arresting you, and also face a judge who will probably be very annoyed with you.
Of course, if you really and truly can't make it to Minnisota, and the court won't reschedule, then you may have to default.
If you do, and a warrant is issued for your arrest, here's what you do: (1) get back to Minnisota as soon you can, (2) avoid getting arrested by the police while you...(3) go to the court that issued the arrest warrant and present yourself to the court clerk (*early* in the morning before arraignments start), who will (4) probably cancel the default warrant and you'll probably be able to see the judge for bail/bond the same day.
This will, at least, avoid the inconvenience of being arrested and physically dragged into the court.

Usually, depending on what the citation is for, they will let you pay the citation without having to appear at all. If not and you miss your court date, they will issue an attatchment for you and you will have to pay for the attatchment to be lifted then you can pay the fine. But, it can be different from one state to the other. I live in Louisiana, so your state would probably handle it a little more professional.

If the citation states you must appear on the date specified, you can be charged with contempt of court and a bench warrant will be issued for your arrest. If the citation was for something minor like a traffic ticket, you can just pay the fine they impose and you'll be set.

You need to either have an attorney represent you, or ask the court to allow you to make an appearance by telephone.

Ask them if you can just pay the fine and not appear. I did that once. Otherwise, you better get a plane ticket and show up.
