By doing push-ups (They build biceps, triceps, calf muscles, thigh muscles, and they help make you more sturdy. Do sit-ups, also jog. (Also, jumping jacks and jumping rope.) Studies show that all these excercises not only giver you a better workout but (obviously) are much safer.

For cardio, you can walk, run, hike, and climb. For strength training, you can do a web search for "bodyweight training" or "body weight training." This uses push-ups, sit-ups, and all kinds of other exercises that don't require gyms or equipment. Lots of the web sites you will find will want to sell you a book or program (hey, everybody wants to make a buck), but you should be able to get enough information for free to take care of yourself.

Once you have a little money to spend, i suggest a good dumbbell set, followed by a FID (flat-incline-decline) bench. Lots of people think that the dumbbells just work you harder than the machines or barbells because they require balance and control, and, obviously, they're cheaper.

Do it the old fashioned way. Here's the basics of one session:

1. Run to build up your stamina
2. Calisthenics
a. push ups, start 5 and work your way up to 50
b. squats, start with 10 and work your way up to 100 (later
with a 25# bag and then a 50# of potatos or sand in
your arms).
c. Sit ups, start with 10 and work your way up to 100
d. Pull ups, sart with 1 then work your way up to 25
e. Fly's and curls and pull downs with bricks, then cinder
blocks start with 10 with a brick and work your way up
to 12 with a cinder block.

Once you can do all of the "work your way up to's" on this list five times in an hour you will list be in shape, good shape.

Then double the effort on all with a 50# bag of sand on your back for the push ups and in a backpack for the pull ups, once you can do that, no one in their right mind will mess with you.
