Unfortunately, the immigration debate on this board is full of red herrings (otherwise known as BS). Examples:

1. "Children of illegal immigrants shouldn't be allowed to go to school because their parents don't pay taxes." Rubbish. Lots of US citizens -- native-born ones -- don't pay taxes. There are US citizens who don't pay taxes for generations. Yet you don't see anyone here seriously suggesting that their children should be denied an education. Not only that, but primary education is funded almost entirely by local real estate taxes, which, needless to say, are paid only by people who actually own real estate. Does anyone here seriously believe that children of renters should be kept out of school as well?

2. "Illegal immigrants are a terrorist threat." Rubbish. Every one of the 9/11 hijackers was in this country legally. Every single terrorist in every single terrorist plot uncovered since then was either a US citizen, a legal immigrant, or the holder of a valid non-immigrant visa. Perhaps people's anger would be better directed at this country's immigration officials.

3. "Illegal immigrants don't respect our laws." Rubbish. If you want to see lots of people who disrespect our laws, visit the nearest USCIS office. (Before you reach for that thumb-down button, I ask you, please read a few more lines here.) Many immigrants do everything that is required of them, file every necessary piece of paper, keep abreast of mercurial, byzantine procedures, pay every fee, do everything they are told -- and yet become "illegal" because of bureaucratic incompetency and oversight, over which they have no control. There are many "illegal" immigrants (a misleading term in many ways) who spend every penny they earn trying to legalize themselves, and who want nothing more than to become citizens and to make a life in this country; on the other hand, you have many legal immigrants who mostly live overseas, pay their taxes to other governments and never bother to apply for the US citizenship; they don't participate in their communities, don't vote, and treat their *legal* immigrant status as something to fall back on. Immigration laws in this country are in serious need of reform -- consider the fact alone that while it is "illegal" to become a widower if your green card is based on marriage, it is perfectly legal never to apply for the US citizenship.

4. "Because of illegal immigrants, wages go down." So do prices.

5. "Illegal immigrants never do anything to become legal." Rubbish. Most illegal immigrants eventually legalize themselves. So if you think that educating their kids is too expensive, consider the expense that an illiterate citizenry will create.

6. "Being an illegal immigrant is a crime." Rubbish. This is something that coragryph touched upon. There is a world of difference between someone who skips a final order of deportation and someone who is awaiting a decision on his green card application.

7. "Illegal immigrants have sanctuary cities." This isn't even rubbish -- it's an outright lie. No municipality has ever claimed to abrogate federal law. I call upon all those who perpetuate this nonsense to cite one municipal ordinance that shows it to be true.

8. "Illegal immigrants are all on welfare." Another lie. Being out of status automatically disqualifies a person from welfare, Medicaid and virtually all other forms of governmental assistance. People who perpetuate *this* lie should ponder the difference between "Mexican" and "illegal".

9. "We shouldn't educate children of illegal immigrants because ESL programs are too expensive." More red herrings. There are many requirements for immigrating to the US *legally*, but knowledge of English -- by the applicants' minor children -- isn't one of them. Lots of legal immigrant children don't speak English and take ESL classes. If you oppose ESL programs, fine -- but it is an issue totally separate and apart from illegal immigration.

(And even if you do think ESL programs are too expensive, let it be a consolation that the US gets tens of thousands of highly skilled professionals every year for free -- professionals whose top-notch education was sponsored entirely by taxpayers of other countries.)

Edited to answer toe-crap: If you want illegal aliens not to go to school because they are illegal aliens, fine -- just don't say you don't want them to go to school because they don't pay real estate taxes, don't speak English, or worship Satan. Those are bogus reasons, and you know it. Now, contrary to your statement, the word "illegal" is NOT self-explanatory (except to the choir). It is not even a proper jurisprudential term in immigration law. It is a loaded LAY word broadly applied to people who are "not in status". In other words, anyone whose status is being changed from one to another is "illegal". A tourist who falls in love, gets married in Vegas and is waiting for his application for green card to be processed is, technically, "illegal". So is an immigrant widower, whose I-485 has been lingering in the bureaucracy for years. And I cannot tell you how many people are made "illegal" through bureaucratic errors and delays. There are lots of immigrants who come into this country legally and do everything they are required, and then are made "illegal" by the stupefying ineptitude of the immigration services -- and put in deportation years, sometimes decades after their arrival. Nor is "illegal" a self-explanatory term insofar as you are imputing guilt to others, some of whom do not even have the mental capacity to form the criminal intent you've been describing in your post.

Be more specific. They can't pay what they cost, typically, even if they pay taxes (it is $10,000 k-12 per child per year in California). Are you speaking of the Dream Act for taxpayer kids only, and only those already here and of student age and brought young etc? I'd go along with that if drafted right. I can't support open borders for taxpaying poor people because there are reasons we limit how many can come and our schools, particularly in California, are living proof.

Unfortunately, education in this country has become a matter of 'not enough to go around.'

No I would not. Overcrowding, ESL programs, special needs supplies (books, etc.) also special needs for attention make it to very expensive to OUR children and I am not talking about $$. My county is building 3 new schools with plans for at least 2 more in the works. We do not have the infrastructure to handle this problem.

My state is currently the fastest growing population of illegal immigrants, we are NOT a border state. We do NOT have the infrastructure (housing, schools, roads) for this explosion of people.... A child only gets one chance at an education and even though my heart goes out to the children of illegal immigrants, we can not allow this happen to our school systems....

A secondary education is a privilege not a right for our own children, its not even a right for illegal immigrants and offering ANY special program such as in state tuition (which is not offered to citizens) is insulting. We can not control scholarships but any special privileges at the expense to the taxpayers (citizens) is just wrong.

The thumbs down is to your right ------------>

Allowing illegal aliens education and other rights that only should be allowed to citizens is why we are where we are today with tens of millions of illegal aliens invading our country with no end in sight If you do not remove the factors contributing to illegal immigration, it will never stop and we will never solve the problem.

Illegal aliens have NO rights in this country....and that includes education. What part of illegal don't you understand??

Redisca

Children of illegal immigrants (if they weren't born here) shouldn't be allowed to go to school BECAUSE THEY ARE ILLEGAL ALIENS ALSO, regardless of their parents' status. Illegal aliens do not have the right or privilege to attend our schools. They have the right to attend school in THEIR country.

I have rarely heard the complaint that illegal immigrants are a terrorist threat. The main complaint against illegal aliens are the fact that they are...illegal. We admit more legal immigrants to the U.S. than any other country. All countries have immigration laws and...guess what...all countries enforce them. Americans have the right to demand that our government enforces OUR immigration laws. We do not, and WILL NOT ever welcome illegal aliens here.

It is true illegal immigrants don't respect our laws. Every day they remain in this country as an illegal alien they are breaking our laws. This is not the only law they break...of course. They use fake or stolen IDs at the very least. I won't even go into the many violent criminals in this country that are illegal aliens.

Only 25% of illegal aliens work in agriculture...that means the other 75% are filled by legal immigrants and U.S. citizens. In many areas of the country there are little to no illegal aliens working in agriculture at all...This is a common argument by those that have an agenda supporting illegal aliens in our country. It is a fallacy that prices go down. Do you believe the prices of houses are less, or even affected because illegal aliens work in construction?? No they are not. The employers are the ones benefitting by hiring illegal aliens. They should be put in prison, fined, and/or put out of business.

Where does your statistic that "most illegal immigrants eventually legalize themselves" come from?? Why do you think we have tens of millions of illegal aliens here...with the numbers increasing all the time?? Why do you think they are screaming for amnesty?

The term illegal is self-explanatory. It doesn't matter if the person sneaks across the border or overstays a Visa. They are here in violation of our immigration laws. Period. Using fake and stolen IDs is also a crime. These are the absolute minimum number of laws that nearly EVERY illegal alien breaks. Many break a great deal more.

I never heard anyone claim that ALL illegal immigrants are on welfare, but there ARE those that receive governmental assistance at American taxpayer expense.

As far as not educating illegal alien children...that is a no brainer. They are entitled to an education in their country of origin. Illegal aliens have no rights in this country. American taxpayers should NOT be required to pay for educating illegal aliens. This is morally WRONG. We have our own children to educate. Our tax dollars are NOT for illegal aliens. They are for OUR children.

And for those that say...its okay for them...they don't mind paying a more taxes for illegal aliens....tell you what...you can pay my share...because I DO MIND.

EDIT:

Let me repeat this, since you obviously did not comprehend it the first time (it was the very first sentence of my post).
Children of illegal immigrants (if they weren't born here) shouldn't be allowed to go to school BECAUSE THEY ARE ILLEGAL ALIENS ALSO, regardless of their parents' status.

I said NOTHING about if they pay taxes.

The term illegal means the opposite of legal. It means unlawful. If this is too difficult for you to comprehend, I'm sorry, I can't help you there. To most people it is self-explanatory, not to insult your intelligence. BTW ignorance of the law is no excuse....and I'm sure you have heard that before.

The law is black and white. You are either in this country legally, or you are not. Period. Simple. I don't write the laws and neither do you. Interpretations of the law is also not up to you or I. You are attempting to assign YOUR definition of legal or illegal to people based on your OPINION, and it isn't going to work. Arguing with me about it does not change the facts (or our laws).

I support education for America's children for children of legal residents and visitors and of course citizens. you know-
People that have rights because they went through the long drawn out and sometimes unpleasant process of becoming a part of this country legally.

As foreign nationals illegals and their children should be eligible for no benefits -including public education.

No because there is alot more to it than that.
If they are filling up the classrooms then we have increased costs of more teachers to be hired and more classrooms to be built.
more busdrivers, more school board people, more school district administration, more school board security,
health department costs for making sure they are immunized and disease free. as most other kids already have that done.

kids such as that usually need special attention on focus for english, which adds to costs becuase unless you bring in someone extra to take care of that then the other children have diminished attention on their education as the teacher will have to take time away from others.

No. They are in the country ILLEGALLY. Let them pursue education in their own country..

For those of you that say you support illegal immigrants education...you can pay MY share of taxes for them. It's nice you are so generous with other people's money.

coragraph.

If the children weren't born here, they are illegal aliens too. They have a right to an education in the country they came from. Illegal aliens have NO RIGHTS in this country. They do not have a right to OUR TAX MONEY paid from OUR INCOME!!!

OUR children should be benefitting from the taxes we pay for education.

Even if they pay taxes they recieve 20,000,000,000,000 X more than that in benefits. Most of them are disrespectful of our country and should be deported. The only thing we should educate them on is what will happen to them if they stay , which should be what nature intends, a brutal beat down!

2007-07-23 15:16:18 · answer #9 · answered by Q 2 · 3 1

Sure.

After they have shown that they are paying income taxes as illegal aliens, the government can begin deportation hearings against the Parents.

Win/Win in my book..
