I had this done for my brother also thru www.familytreedna.com. We've done the 12 marker test which was around $99. Part of it I believe depends on whether or not there is a DNA project for your family surname. In my case there was, so the cost was $99 whereas if you do just a single DNA test that isnt part of a DNA group thats set up, then the cost $149.00

As someone else stated, the cost depends on the # of markers you have tested. The 25 marker test isn't suppose to be any better than just doing 12. I'm going up to the 3rd level on my brother's DNA test once I have the money set aside.

One nice thing about being part of a DNA project/group is that they tell you the results as it matches up to your group. It provided me with the 5 closest people my brother matched up to and their email addresses when possible. Along with some additional info.

I'm considering doing it for my son. He's adopted and nothing is known about his father, but a DNA test may at least tell me an idea of his heritage

They cant do a blood test to determin this. The only reason they would do a blood test is to check the level of medication in your bloodstream to see if it is at the right levels. Oh, if your therapists ordered them and youre not on medication.. then it would have to maybe be a drug test. I cant think of anything else they would test for unless you are on medication. Or like they said above to rule out physical illness. I agree on that.

Y dna passes from father to son only

mitochondrial dna passes from mother to both sons and daughters but only the daughter passes it on to her children.

Autosomal dna is what most of your DNA is. You get it 50-50 from both parents. It is the only dna that can prove paternity of a female. They use Autosomal to determine ethnicity.

Put Family Tree DNA into your search engine. It has the largest data base.

Also there is SMGF (Sorenson Molecular Genealogical Foundation). They are doing DNA for free but the won't send you a report. You can see your family line on their website once they have completed it. They apparently are getting a lot of tests. I sent mine in March or April and they tell me they have it but it isn't on the internet yet, but it will be eventually. It doesn't give the names of any living people. You have to furnish them with a 4 generation genealogy.

HLA typing might work for you. Find a red cross clinic or the main red cross in your city or town and ask them . They require a few tests to screen donors for bone marrow donation.

By the way, HLA stands for Human Leukocyte Antigen.
