Each is fiction, each extremely popular, and each utilizes a form of the dark arts or sorcery within the storytelling.

Although, the same could be argued for Christianity.

Star wars is a hero epic, and the hero archetypes were put in the human heart to point towards Christ.

Lord of the Rings has a built in gospel, and has many Christian themes.

Harry Potter threatens few Christians, since it is also a hero epic, with useful parables of good vs. evil. The few that do not like it, do not like the references to sorcery and witchcraft, which are forbidden (a good witch is still a witch).

I don't feel threatened by HP, but I'm not interested in feeding it to my children either since many of the books' themes run counter to what I teach. That said, my children, all avid readers, aren't interested in HP or the fantasy genre, so whether to read HP or not has not been a big issue in our household.

I can't speak about SW, but LoR and Narnia were written by Christians with a completely different worldview than HP's author, and it is evident in the storytelling. The sorcery or dark arts are just literary devices to tell a good story - whether its HP or LoR. The subtle weaving of the story's themes from thousands of decisions about dialogue, setting, characters, as well as the literary devices, are what reveals the author's viewpoint, not the single choice of a literary device like sorcery.

Not sure what to make of your last comment. Can't see how you'd think Christianity was built from dark arts or sorcery.

I don't know of any genuine Christians who feel threatened by Harry Potter.

Many oppose it since it promotes witchcraft, but Christians also opposed Star Wars 30 years ago for the same reason.

The Lord of the Rings was quite different since that story was written by a Christian for the purpose of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I don't see how any could "argue the same for Christianity".

I have no idea. Most people who are against Harry Potter have never read the books or seen the movies. I thought the books and movies were all about witchcraft and wizardry...until I read them for myself. I think they're great books, and I have no more of a problem with them than I do with LOTR, Star Wars, Chronicles of Narnia, or Shakespeare.

I actually went and bought book seven today, and I've already read the first six...twice. And seen the first four movies LOADS of times...and saw the fifth movie about a week and a half ago. I LOVE Harry Potter!

And yes, I'm a Christian.

Good question... I think it is rather stupid myself I'll bet the stink by Christians just made it that more appealing ...LOL to think they don't like Harry but witchcraft (REBELLION) runs rampant in the church today! I am a believer but I love Harry ... And think the movies are entertaining and very well done..The books are great also!

whoever said Christians weren't threatened by Star Wars or lord of the rings?

The Force is another religion. very similar to Zoroastrianism. wouldn't trust it. and the way skywalker uses his witchcraft to levitate the light saber! pure satanism....

gandalf is a witch! i'm very threatened by the thought of someone having a different religious belief than I. I do not associate with ppl that enjoy that pure Ode to Satan we call lord of the rings!

I have a theory, it isn't popular, but I think it is true. Star Wars is a film. Lord of the Rings has long been considered a Christian allegory (like Narnia). Harry Potter is over two thousand pages of reading pleasure with few pictures. Religious people who have a problem with Harry, in my view, just don't want children to learn that reading really big books with no pictures is easy or fun. Kids who learn to love reading might actually read the Bible. Then those kids won't grow up to sit in churches passively and believe whatever they are told to believe. People who feel threated by Harry Potter are threrated by children who read and think for themselves.

It's the nature of being legalistic. Those Christians who have a problem with one and not the other are to me one of two things:
1) Rather weak in their faith, and so should not attend any showing of that movie. They are right not to go, but they are not right in demanding that no one else has to go.

2) Irrational, hypocritical. They have relaxed themselves to accept one form of entertainment, and condemned another, even though the use of the same forms of "sin" is displayed on the screen.

No joke some are, brb with Link. Well at least one does.

Edit: nevermind he is just a troll.

Very slight but it really worried me, you'll to scroll past the *Song* to get to it.

Lord of the rings, has some very Christian undertones, if you read it.

The "magic" used in Harry Potter is always drawn from the power of dark magic.
Lord of the Rings at least had a moral message with the power of light reigning as victorious.
Star Wars is just silliness.

Dark arts of from Satan.
The power of God is anything but dark.
