I like to look in the dictionary for questions like this. It's very helpful to remove some issues that might come up if I were to only write what I think.
I am a Christian because I believe in Jesus Christ, who God sent to die for my sins. According to Jesus, anyone who believes in him can gain eternal life. That's the very short version of the story. You can find out much more about Jesus in the part of the Bible called the New Testament. The first four books tell his story.
Christianity
–noun, plural -ties.
1. the Christian religion, including the Catholic, Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox churches.
2. Christian beliefs or practices; Christian quality or character: Christianity mixed with pagan elements; the Christianity of Augustine's thought.
3. a particular Christian religious system: She followed fundamentalist Christianity.
4. the state of being a Christian.
5. Christendom.
6. conformity to the Christian religion or to its beliefs or practices.

Those that really follow Christ and his teachings;
John 18:37-Therefore Pilate said to him: “Well, then, are you a king?” Jesus answered: “You yourself are saying that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone that is on the side of the truth listens to my voice

Trying to keep this neutral and reasonably complete...
"Christianity" is supposed to be those who follow Jesus. He was a 1st century Jewish Rabbi that rebelled against established religion, claiming that it "followed G-d in word only", that "peoples hearts were far away from G-d". He tried to get rid of all the extra religious rules that man had made. He reduced all 613 Jewish laws back to just two, "Love G-d with all; and love your neighbor as yourself".
Christian faith from his teaching and life can be summarized as: man cannot possibly keep G-d's commandments; since the penalty is death, G-d send Jesus, his son, tol pay it for everyone; having paid it, G-d raised him from the dead; then took him to heaven.
Some christians believe that just believing that Jesus died for them is enough to make them good in the eyes of G-d; others believe that you still must try your best to keep the commandments, and rely of Jesus' death to pay for their faults.
Some believe the old Jewish teaching are done away with; others believe that their are in full force.
There are many other variations... hence many different "denominations"
