Am relocating to South Bay area, will be working in Manhattan Beach but can't afford rents in that area. Appear to be lots of more affordable apts. just east of 405 - but not sure how far to go that direction.

Robert, you don't say whether you're single or have a family. If you have a family with kids of school age, you DON'T want to live in Hawthorne, because the schools there are not good.

Torrance has a great school system, and you might want to live there if you have kids. But not Hawthorne.

Hawthorne & Gardena are close to Manhattan Beach. Both have good areas and bad areas. When you find a place you are interested in, just spend some time walking around the neighborhood and check out the people. I live in west Gardena, but I own my home and live in a relatively nice area, but of course rents are terrible everywhere. Might be good in the beginning to find a roommate that already has a place so you don't rush into a long term lease and then find out you don't like it. Pick up a copy of The Daily Breeze or the Easy Reader newspapers and you can find roommates. Or even a Residential Inn, where you can stay and get aquainted with the area. You can also ask the Police dept about crime info.

Is Hawthorne California Safe

I got really bad news for ya. Hawthorne has gangs and plenty of drug dealers. You dont want to live there.

For affordable, there are areas of Torrance that are nice and not too expensive. I am guessing that you are going to be working on Sepulveda Blvd. You might try looking in El Segundo. But anywhere near the beach is going to be costly and you dont want to live east of the 405, south of the airport..

www.cityofhawthorne.com has demograghics, housing and relocation info etc for that area. You might also visit the local police dept for some stats and areas to avoid.

Good luck on your new job!
