You can have your own policy even if you don't work, but if you are living at home and under 18 it's a lot cheaper to be under your parent's policy.

You could if you are 18 or older. The rates that you will pay will be a lot higher than if they were under your parents name.
That is why people do it that way. The car should also be under the parents name to cut costs on insurance. You can call insurance co's and get a quote on the costs and see how much higher they are. good luck.

YOU CAN HAVE YOUR OWN INSURANCE IF YOU WANT IT AND CAN AFFORD IT BUT IF YOU ARE STILL LIVING AT HOME YOU SHOULD STAY INSURED UNDER YOUR PARENTS INSURANCE.

THIS WAY IT WILL BE CHEAPER FOR YOU BUT IF YOU SCREW UP IT WILL HURT YOUR PARENTS.
