I have heard that celery helps your mood. It has a calming property to it that helps relax. Also, anything with trypophan is good.
Here is what I found online:
Tryptophan, found as a component of dietary protein, is particularly plentiful[2] in chocolate, oats, bananas, dried dates, milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, red meat, eggs, fish, poultry, sesame, chickpeas, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, spirulina and peanuts. It is found in turkey at a level typical of poultry in general [1].
For some time, tryptophan was available in health food stores as a dietary supplement. Since 2002, L-Tryptophan has been sold again in its original form. Many people found tryptophan to be a safe and reasonably effective sleep aid, probably due to its ability to increase brain levels of serotonin (a calming neurotransmitter when present in moderate levels) and/or melatonin (a sleep-inducing hormone secreted by the pineal gland in response to darkness or low light levels).[3]
Clinical research tended to confirm tryptophan's effectiveness as a natural sleep aid and for a growing variety of other conditions typically associated with low serotonin levels or activity in the brain. (Particularly work by Dr. Richard Wurtman at MIT). In particular, tryptophan showed considerable promise as an antidepressant alone, and as an "augmenter" of antidepressant drugs. Other promising indications included relief of chronic pain and reduction of impulsive, violent, manic, addictive, anxiety-related, obsessive, and compulsive behaviours and disorders.

There are no real otc anti-depressants. It's been said that St. Johns Wart helps enhance your mood but if you're depressed enough to want to take a pill it's usually to depressed to settle for St. Johns Wart. I wish there was something better without a prescription but unfortunately there isn't. If a prescription is to much money then a lot of times the doc will give you some samples to help out a bit.

There is no such thing as an true OTC anti-depressant. But one suggestion, if you can take herbal supplements... when I was in college and I didn't want to go on a scrip because of money (no insurance) and side affects... my doctor suggested St. John's Wort.... it worked really well for me... I had anxiety issues and it helped a lot... but just check with a pharmacist and be sure if you are on any meds that it won't interact with them.

Mistress is right. I believe St. Johns Wort is the only thing over the counter for depression, but it's an herbal remedy only, meaning it's not proven to work.

5HTP may help. Some have also found relief with St. John's Wort.
However, IMO, your best bet is to go with established pharmaceuticals with a track record of success (e.g., SSRIs).
