The music is the easy part of what a DJ provides. If you have a stereo that will work then the lack of a PA might not be a big deal, but you want have a microphone for speeches and toasts. Also, the DJ usually works as a master of ceremonies letting guests know when different activities are taking place like money dance, cake cutting, bouquet toss, etc.. If you have someone else available to do these things then you might be OK. Personally I think a good DJ can really make a reception great. I'm getting married 8/3 and it is a budget wedding. I am still hiring a DJ even though I own all of the equipment needed and have DJ'd weddings myself. I think there are less noticeable places to cut costs.

OMG.
DO NOT ASK A FAMILY MEMBER TO DO THIS FOR YOU.... a GOOD dj with experience at a wedding will cater to everyones musical tastes (even if the dj doesn't like the music) A relative will play what they like and nothing else. If your 22 year old friend is in charge of the music do you think they will follow up a an Al Martino tune with a bit of Tony Orlando and Dawn, then break into 3 or 4 of the newest hits? I don't think so! LOL
One less thing for you to worry about is the music, and we all know how crappy a party or wedding reception can be without good music constantly playing. Shell out the couple of hundred bucks and you won't have to worry about the music, the sound system... lighting and.... (a mini MC)... Oh.. and don't forget to invite the neighbours to the reception party after the dinner is done.. this way if they complain.. you will always be able to say... "hey.. We invited you to come over"
Have fun!!

I attend approximately 40 weddings a year and see this all the time, people do not realize that a DJ is not just about the music, a DJ coordinates your events. The timing of the music is one thing but who will keep you on track for when to cut the cake, first dance, and father daughter dances as well as keep your guests entertained while your are off taking formal pictures.
The ipod is ok for dinner back ground music but when you start your first dance do you want the memory of having a friend fumble for five minutes while you stand there looking awkward waiting for him to the find the right song?
If you are ok with having bumpy timing on your wedding day and want to save the money go ahead but be ware that by having a good DJ you will have a much more stress free wedding.

It depends on how important having a 'DJ' is to you and if it is in your budget. It is not a waste of money if you want it. However, dj's can be expensive and it may be cheaper to have a radio or a close friend be in charge of the music. But, it is really up to you. If you can't see your wedding without a DJ i would fork out the money. If it does not bother you to not you could always put that money into something else. Just remember there are other ways to have music w/o having to pay for a DJ. Good luck!

No, because having a dj allows the wedding party and guests to enjoy the reception. A dj will take care of music so someone at the party does not have to. I went to a small wedding last weekend and there was a dj, it helps to have someone make entrance announcements, song announcements and such without taking away from the guests. It also allows music to play. Believe me, it will be worth it and you can find resonable djs out there.

This is a very open ended question. It's your day and you should get what you want. An alternative though, is to set up a pc with the program Windows Media Player on it, hook up up some speakers, make your own playlist and click play. I had the whole 9 yards for my wedding, but simply did not see the point in forking out thousands for a DJ, when I could set it up on my own pc and have a friend keep an eye on the playlist. The money we saved, my husband and I spent on ourselves on honeymoon.

No, it isnt, but if you are trying to save some money and you dont want to have your guest jackin with the stereo during the party, I would down load about 6 cd's of some running theme music that you and your squeeze like. Stick it in the CD player and hit the random play button and party your butt off. I am not a big fan of the DJ.....they seem to talk too much.

Its a personal choice. For me, DJs are always a waste of money because they are sooooo cheeseball.
I would much rather play music from the computer or laptop through the sound system and designate someone to do announcements...afterall it really doesn't take a genius or a professional to say "time to cut the cake guys!"
Use the money to upgrade something else like decorations or food.

Not if that is what you want! It all depends on what you like and can reasonably afford. If you are on a budget and want something else more, well then the DJ can be done without. There will be so much talking and eating that the dancing is really not necessary! You can still do whatever games and activities you want with a cd player.
