no one actually knows exactly what time Jesus died but we do know this:
He was crucified on a Friday around the time of the passover. In Jewish culture of the time, the people would have to be home with their families before sundown. Roman crucifixion could take days in some cases so that would pose a problem if Jesus hung on for days. He took a severe beating prior to the cross so that contributed to his early death. It was foretold in the Old Testament book of Isaiah that no bone on his body would be broken. In order to speed up crucifixions, the guards would sometimes break the legs of the crucified so that they could not push up on the nails to breathe. They would then suffocate sooner. in this case, the guards were asked to speed up the process so that the Jewish spectators could be home before sundown. Without knowing the prophecy, rather than break his legs they pierced his side and found that he was already dead.
Afterward, Jesus was taken down and prepared for burial in the tomb. This all suggests that there was sufficient time to get all this done before dusk. 3:00 is a good estimate but i know of no actual authority to confirm that.

Matthew 27:45 says that there was darkness over the land from the 6th hour, and Jesus was already upon the cross at that time.
Time was measured by the number of hours after sunrise.
The sixth hour would put this darkness over the land at mid-day / noon !
In verse 46, at the ninth hour is when Jesus "gave up the ghost" and died on the cross.
So, 3:00 PM is fairly accurate, nine hours after sunrise.
That left His Jewish followers only 3 hours to prepare His body for burial because the dead had to be buried by sundown of the day they died.

In Luke 23 it says:
44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45for the sun stopped shining.
I think Jesus was hung on the cross around 9:00 in the morning. Come midday would be the sixth hour, Jesus died in that sixth hour and had to be put into the tomb before sundown being the Sabbath would start at sundown

actually a little known fact is that he really died at 2pm.
however it would look better if it was 3, therefore they had all the clocks set ahead so no one would know, when later they found this out they said it was because of something called "daylight savings time".
