Anything but Tai Chi, wrestling, or Gracie JiuJitsu. Tai Chi is more art and is less 'martial'; ground fighting is no good for women (you can't grapple with a man that's stronger than you, not unless you want to raped, mugged, etc.).

Try Muay Thai or kickboxing (not Cardio, though), Wing Chun (developed for women by women, although its effectiveness is debated), krav maga (J. Lo- Enough said, hehehe).

Just remember to training realistically and often. And please don't try to take your assailant down.

Be aware of your surroundings. Best bet in the world, no matter what martial art you take up, your unlikely to upset a 6ft tall stocky man with your build. At best, you may disable him temporarily, like knocking him to the floor etc. or hit a sensitive part. That is unless you are armed in some way. To come to a point where you can confidently use technique instead of strength to cause harm will take years of training, which I doubt you have if you have already met the person you are fearful of. Ideally, you need to be aware of your surroundings, go to a few lessons to learn how to put someone on the floor fairly quickly and make a hasty get away.

What's wrong with the kempo/jujitsu school you're going to? They can both be effective arts. I recommend any art that doesn't rely so much on brute force. Wing Chun kung fu, Bagua, aikido, hapkido are all good in my opinion. Tai Chi can be effective but it takes many years just to become proficient (I've seen some of the applications demonstrated and they're devastating). No matter what you choose make sure its being taught realistically.

I would imagine that kempo and jujitsu are going to be just fine for you, but I would say that judo is highly effective as a self-defense art for women, so long as the instructor takes the time to teach groundwork as much as throws, if you happen to have it available to you. I have heard several stories of people who have been attacked and used judo throws to counter the attacks, and I have heard a few stories of women who have stopped a rapist by breaking his arm, since judo groundwork teaches how to control someone when they are between your legs.

Akido is really good in that the techniques take very little strength to control a much larger attacker.

However, pretty much any defensive art you are comfortable with will be beneficial. I don't think that there is any particular one that is best for females.

That being said, martial arts are nice, but having a taser, a can of mace, or a properly licensed concealed firearm require less skill to use and are very effective.

Your favourite form of martial arts is the one that's best for you. This surprises a lot of people, but one of my karate teachers (who was a man, by the way) actually said that the female body is better designed for martial arts. Since you want to defend yourself against men, it sounds like you've chosen good martial arts, but any form can potentially be good for defence; people have even been known to defend themselves with Tai Chi, believe it or not!

The best defense is awareness, not martial arts. If you are aware of your surroundings and know what's going on around you, you'll lessen your risks a lot more. Having a sense of strength in combat is dangerous, especially after you drank a few beers and maybe smoked some.

The second best defense is a good pair of well-tied running shoes.

Just keep an eye out, be wary, but don't be fearful.

ju jitsu tkd kempo is great for actually putting up a fight against somebody, but if your being raped by a 300 pounder that is the last thing you want to do!!!!! Krav Maga teaches you to avoid the situation completely but if you do end up in a bad situation it also teaches you how to get out of it as fast as possible not continuing to try to knock out someone or submit someone who is 200 pounds heavier than you, why would you want to fight or challenge a 300 pounder with ju jitsu or tkd, that's hilarious.

I really enjoy Kung Fu - have been doing it for a year. Lycanthrope is right -- many of the chinese were very small and slender and have learned to use another attackers momentum against him.

Abm 121 -- I LOVE to spar with men like you. I am approaching 50 and I am fat (and was out of shape when I started studying) it is VERY satisfying to throw men like you around. My favortite sparring partner is a 17yo young man that is extremely athletic - he does every sport in highschool including football and wrestling. The first time I got him in sparring, I whooped so loud, my instructor thought I had injured myself (again) LOL. You will have your come uppance one day little man.

Wing Chun Kung Fu. It was developed by a female (it's not just for females, though). It would definitely be effective against forceful situations EXACTLY like the ones you describe in the details of the question. I'm POSITIVE it would work. Hope you find my answer useful.
