Hmm, it isn't any of these so far. I never thought there were so many species with cloven-hoof leaves.

The information is insufficient even for a wild guess.
Still I am going to be foolish for once and hazard a guess .
It can be Bauhinia sps. of family Leguminosae sub -family Caesalpinoideae .
There are numerous species of world wide distribution with
typical leaves as described by the asker -
Kindly click on the link to see many of them-

My first thought was ginkgo also. Tulip poplar? Maybe, I can see that too. It would be easier to ID the tree if we also knew where you saw it--in other words, is it in the wild? If so, where? Or is it planted in someone's yard or in a botanical garden? Again, if so, where? If we know the habitat and location that may help narrow it down. Ginkgos are planted all over the place as ornamentals, but you would never find one growing in the wild (in the US). Tulip poplars on the other hand are native to many eastern forests but are rarely planted as ornamentals because they get stinkin huge.

The only leaf I can think of that looks like that is the Ginkgo Tree, also known as "Gingko Biloba." Maybe this is what you are referring to?

Do you have any other info? height, bark characteristics, leaf color (top/bottom), vein pattern, leaf rim (smooth/toothed/lobed)? Where is this tree found? I know of a wildflower with a leaf somewhat like that, but I can't think of any trees off the top of my head.
