Hank Aaron said that he thought the triple was a lot more exciting than the home run because the play lasted so much longer. I've always used triples as an unofficial tie-breaker when comparing hitters. Ryne Sandberg used to hustle and get his fair share of 3 baggers even though he played in Wrigley and it always tickled me. Jim Rice on year led the league with 16, which dumbfounded me! Babe Ruth had over a hundred and Willie Mays used to make me gasp when he legged one of his over a hundred lifetime triples out.
So what is a similar stat that you like. (There really is no reason why triples impress me, I just like the stat.) Yours might be a pitchers stat or whatever.

Yes, important stats tell you a lot, but that isn't the question. Apart from gleaning a player's worth, there are stats that one just ENJOYS, whether they are important or not. OPS, slugging pct., RISP, OBP, 2 out RBSs -- c'mon. Those are FUN? alwaysmoose, Mike McGoo, Double L. Loser, and emehms got the point. I only wish I could give the points to all four. Sorry to the three who don't get them: I gotta choose SOMEONE.

No there's a reason. Triples equal hustle. I don't know, but I like the Walks catergory. Seems simple, but a patient hitter can drive pitchers crazy.

For me, the stat I look for is batting average with runners in scoring position, as well as R.B.I.'s, particularly 2 out R.B.I.'s. It tells me who I can rely on in a clutch situation. Some players stress out in that situation, or just don't have what it takes to come through. I fully agree with your pick of triples being an exciting stat as well. As already referred to by yourself and someone else, it means the player who hit it hustled, and I respect players who give it everything they got, every game, no matter the score or where they are in the standings. I think triples are also cool because they don't happen all that often.

RISP with 2 outs.

Thats defines how clutch a player is. Most important thing in baseball.

As a yankee i remember in the late 90s that the Yankees would just always seem to get that hit with 2 outs to a run in. Thats really whats a team great.

OPS is the most important offensive statistic. OBP + Slugging explains everything a hitter does. It measures his ability to get on base along with his ability to drive the ball with extra base power, which in turn leads to scoring runs. This quite simply measures your ability to score runs and your ability to drive them in.

The statistic I like the best is Wins. I don't mean individual wins for a pitcher, I mean your team winning games. No other stat matters.

i like the SB. not too many players run anymore. i think a sb is an easy way to set yourself up for scoring position. if more guys stole bases then more runs would be produced.

Triples are very impressive. I really look at batting average, and RBIs. If you can hit for average and drive in the runs, that's awesome! Out of the two I'd say that RBIs "please" me the most.

Slugging percentage, and batting avg. with runs in scoring position. more pressure on the hitter then.

I always like batting avg. If your entire team hits over .300, theres a pretty damn good chance your going to get a couple runs
