I agree w/ the suggestion of trimming a bit of fur (you'd only need to do this to 2 of them obviously) until you know them well enough to tell them apart.
Our 2 boys rats are nearly identical but 1 has a small crimp in his left ear & the other has slightly more prominant eyes. We shoulda named them Thompson & Thompson lol.

The trouble with "marking" them is that what you use may be toxic to them even if it isn't to humans. Please DO NOT tie a string around any part of their anatomy. That would be the same as torturing them because number one, you do not know if it's too tight, and number two, they will gnaw it off either injuring themselves or swallowing the string which then becomes a bowel hazard.
If you absolutely must do something, take a snippet of hair off from some part of their body - never cut their whiskers! - until you can tell them apart. Maybe one you could cut some off the top of it's head and another off it's back. Be careful not to cut their skin. After awhile, if you are observant, you should be able to tell them apart without marking them.

Don't mark them, they could be allergic to the chemicals in the pen/marker.And definitely don't tie anything around them, choking hazard. Just watch them and learn there personality's.And next time don't get three identical mice ha ha

Use a drop of food coloring on the tip of the tails. Completely non-toxic and safe. In time, you won't need it. You will be able to tell them apart by differences in size and shape of their heads, bodies, ears, eyes, and feet.
Have fun!

One of them isnt bigger or anything? I would keep them in different cages because they might be a male and female. even though the pet store said their not. They said tht about my mice. then i ended up with 14 babies.

lol dont worry i've had that issue before. What I have seen and learned is ok is if you take a small dab of nail polish and quickly dab a little bit on their fur near the tail. Hopefully you either are a girl or have a girlfriend who wears nail polish :)

You can put a small mark on their tails with different colored sharpies. It will eventually fade over time, but then just reapply.
