I have to point out that a *well-bred* Dachshund will not generally have back problems, especially if you keep them in a good weight.
I have an 11-year old Standard male Dachshund who has never shown signs of weakness/pain in his spine.
Owning 4 of these little beasts, here's my list:
Cons: They bark. At most things. They can be difficult to potty train, especially the Miniatures. They are a scent breed, and will follow their noses away if you're not watching, so a fenced-in yard is good. Did I mention that they bark?
Pros: Very snuggly. Very attached to their people. Smart, and highly food motivated. My Standard Longhairs are couch potatoes, and love nothing more than crashing with you while you watch TV. And they are easily portable!
This site was designed by Dachshund owners, and may also help you with your research on the breed:

Good luck!

I have a one year old dachsund. They are very lovable, sweet dogs. They are very energetic and love to play and have fun. They are such great dogs. For cons, I would say the health problems. They are prone to back, hip and kidney problems so you would need to take care of them very well. There are a ton of things you can read about their health problems. They like to bark a lot as well. But if you are firm with them, they will tend not to bark as much.
You made a great choice by chosing this dog.

I have a six year old dachshund. He is very entertaining and friendly. He also gets along great with other pets. Everyone who sees him loves him!! The only cons are he was slow to house train and still does not like to go outside when the grass is wet. He will go if we take him to the front yard.
Of all the dogs my family has ever had, he has the most personality. Good luck!!

I belong to two. They are loving little mugs, big on cuddling and burrowing under the blankets. They think they're tough enough to take on the world but in actuality their sharp yapping barks are annoying. They were bred to chase prey into the burrow and bark so the hunter would know where to find them, so you must be able to tolerate a dog that is low to the ground (watch their backs) and loud. They're amazingly fast. Also hardheaded at times. Love to eat. You have to watch that they don't con you out of so many treats they get fat. Their coat, if they're short-haired, is thin so they need a sweater in the snow and of course, watch them in deep snow as they don't jump as much as they burrow. From time to time they need help getting over something large (like a stone wall) but have no problem getting under the same. I think, and it's just my opinion, they're not a good stay-at-home dog while you work--they want a lap to sit in and if they don't get one, they bark. Definitely a lap dog.

these dogs are very very fragile, there backs can be broken just by jumping off a couch or being a little too rough with it. it is a very sweet and loving dog but not good if you have kids that may be a little to rough with it at times. the breed itself is a very smart breed and doesnt need much grooming considering on which kind of dauchsaund u need. long haired dauchsands of course need more grooming than short haired. there is also different kinds of shorthaired. there is a more softer smoother short haired and a more bristly short haired. hope that helped!

i have a three month old dachshund puppy. she is the sweetest thing ever.
if you are looking for a lapdog, this may be the dog for you. my ollie loves being cuddled and loves sleeping with me and follows me around the house where ever i go. she is very good for companionship. she is very fun to play with also.
the only cons i've noticed are she has been very hard to potty train, and would much rather be punished than go outside. but she is still young so this will change. also, she has a lot of energy, so if you don't have the time to devote to your pup for playing, walking ect, this probably won't be a good dog for you.
