my mother has just been home a week from a month stay in the hospital for a heart attack. She is also diabetic, kidney failure and lung disease. She is unalbe to have any surgery due to her condition. So, basilcally she is home to wait and see what happens next. In the meantime she cannot walk and needs help with cooking, laundry and taking a shower and help with going potty in her commode. My father forgets to sometimes give her her insulin and meds get mixed up if me and my daughter do not check daily. My father is to old and forgetful to take care of her on a fulltime basis. My question is my daughter is six months pregnet and not working and I work fulltime and my vacation and sick leave is used up due to taking it off when she was in the hospital. I cannot afford to take off any more work but I heard the state can help with wages and I just wondered if I could split the care of my mother with my daughter and get some help? Does anyone know how to go about it for us?

You didn't mention what state you live in...but there is a federal program called the Family Medical Leave Act. I believe it includes parents in the criteria.
I suggest you contact your congressman in your area. You can find that phone number in your government pages of the phone book. Or call information (411) and ask for it.
Depending on what state you live in, they may have state programs that can help too. For that you will want to contact your state senator's office which you can find also in the phone book.

Good luck. I just went through this with my father last year. It was a very tough thing to live through.

Get in touch with your local department of human services and your local health department. Explain the situation and they should be able to help or at least point you in the right direction.

You need to contact her doctor to see if he will order a home health agency to come in to the home to oversee her medications.....and once the agency is in place, ask them to send in the home health social worker to help you with resources.

In the front of your local phone book should have phone numbers for assistance in your areas.
FIMA should be of some assistance as well.

good luck.

Talk to the social worker at the hospital that was assigned to your mother's case. He/She can help you.
